There was one Colorbearer per Regiment, he was generally a Sgt, although later on the rank of Ensign was given to some of them. He would have been part of a Colorguard which was made up of other Sgts and Corporals, who were noted for good conduct. They were placed with Company C, which was the Color Company of a Regiment, and positoned in the Center of the Regimental line. The Colorbearer was a position of honor and also one of extreme danger.
