Well, no, I did mean *north* of the Tennessee River. I don't exactly know where I found that, but in support of it, here's Willis Brewer's "Alabama: Her History, Resources
War Record, and Public Men From 1540 to 1872" capsule history:

Tenth Alabama
Cavalry Regiment

This was a regiment organized in the winter of 1863-64, to constitute part of Roddy's command. Richard 0. Pickett of Lauderdale was the colonel, and the men were from the northern counties of Alabama. The services of the regiment were confined in a great measure to outpost operations in the Tennessee valley, though it participated in the Pulaski raid, and other encounters and forays.

Now, I do find that quite odd, though. Could Mr. Brewer (and my other unknown source) be that far off? Hmmmm. I tend to trust your research.
