Don't believe I've ever come across that term. I've really never noticed command structure for medical officers above the rank of surgeon. And the only reason I happen to have any of this information available has to do with my effort to identify all officers serving with Alabama brigades. In the process I discovered there were staff officers associated with military posts, staff officers assigned to tax-in-kind duty, and a cast of thousands. Or so it seems. If the Confederacy could have spared enough of them, each state could have raised a regiment of quartermasters!
