Yes, these men were Ordnance Sergeants, assigned to the Field and Staff. Orderly sergeant (aka first sergeant) was a company-level position, but these men were in the Field and Staff.

I considered the possibility that the first three men might have been acting or temporary ordnance sergeants. That may in fact be the situation in the 8th Arkansas Battalion. The only thing that causes me some doubt is that in most other units, a man temporarily filling a slot was usually identified as "acting" ordnance sergeant. However, not all adjutants were precise in making out the F&S rolls, so that remains the most likely scenario, I guess. Thanks.
