Todd,
Checking my sources on your ancestor I did not find a J.L. Cottles listed in Co. H, 11th Alabama. He is not listed in the muster rolls in the National Archives, nor the muster roll in Montgomery for Co. H, 11th Alabama. There of course is an Isaac L. Cottles of Co. H, 11th Alabama listed. His Confederate Service Card affirms he was 25 years of age, and died of disease November 15, 1861. His muster roll further states he was sick in Richmond July-Aug. 1861, and sick in Richmond since October 24, 1861. This is all I could find that might be relevant to your inquiry.
