No, I'm wrong.

Disregard my reply above. The little map that I drew to help myself understand this was wrong. I had placed Dea's Brigade to the right most position of Clayton's Division, when it should have been right most in Hindman's Division. This changes everything, and I think that Alan is correct.

Just to add a little clarity, brigaded with the 48th were the 99th Indiana, 15th Michigan, 53rd Ohio, and 70th Ohio.

Brigaded with the 19th Ala. were the 22nd Ala. and the 20th Ala.

Whichever was the left most regiment of the three Ala. regiments, could have easily met the 48th Ill. on the parapets.

By the way, the report that I have read doesn't mention the pews, but does mention rails and logs. It states that, "About 10:00 AM all the Army was in place and were busy in throwing up the accustomed rails and logs, which after awhile assumed the form of a parapet. The skill and rapidity with which our men construct these is wonderful and something new to the art of war." While the pews were undoubtedly used, there would not have been many of them (the church was small) and were surely only a small part of the breastworks for the whole 15th Corps.
