John M. SPEARS - Randolph County, AL
Mon Apr 16 09:13:13 2001

I cannot find a regiment for John M SPEARS. Born ca.1834 in Randolph Co., AL. He married ca. 1855 and lived in Randolph Co. AL until after the Civil War. He moved to Attala Co., MS by 1880 then on to Cherokee Co., TX by 1900.

His father was Joshua SPEARS (also living in Randolph Co., AL). Joshua had 4 boys--John M. SPEARS, William Columbus SPEARS, Francis Marion SPEARS--Navy, David C. SPEARS--Union & one son-in-law, William W. SPEARS in the War.

I have copies of transcribed letters William W. SPEARS sent home to his wife--1) June 17 1862 from Montgomery and 2) September 22,1862 from Kentucky. He was killed November 1, 1862. He mention the following SPEARS in his second letter: John SPEARS, Riley SPEARS, Columbus SPEARS, and George SPEARS as well as other Randolph County neighbors and friends. Having either seen them or wanting them to come to his company.

David C. SPEARS was either captured and died a POW or was killed ca. 30 Mar 1865 at Faison's Station, NC. His is the only Military record I have been able to obtain.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
