Cox Brothers in 41st Infantry

I am researching my Cox Family, and looking for information on W.P.Cox, William Posey Cox. Will had two other brothers in the 41st. They are George Washington Cox and John E. Cox.
I do know that George and John survived the War. My GGrandfather, James Emory Cox,was the fourth son of Franklin Cox to serve in the Civil War. They all lived in Marshall County, Alabama.
My GGrandfather enlisted 11/18/1861,Camp Duncan,(Clarksville,Tenn,). He was enlisted by Col. Quarles. James Emory Cox ended the War in the 55th Alabama Infantry, Co. E.
What caused Alabama men to enlist in the 42nd Tennessee Infantry? How do you find out if they were a POW?
I have Rex Millers book "The Forgotten Regiment", and read it cover to cover several times. There is no record of James E. being captured, wounded or taking the oath. I had hoped to find his record of taking the oath, Officials usually gave a description of the man. I would like a description of him.
