Hayes LoweIn answer to your original question>>>Wed Sep 20 23:27:13 2000 there is a way to find out if the brothers served in the Confederate Army. The first place to start is with Broadfoot's Index of Confederate Soldiers. This index is approximately 80% complete. If you don't find them there, start identifying the units that were formed or recruited in the are in which they lived. Then locate the muster rolls. These are usually only 50% complete, but may have names not found in Broadfoots. If you still don't find them listed, try to find published diaries of the companies from the area. These sometimes list events such as capture or desertion by members of the company. Beyond that, it gets real tough. You won't have the benefit of using pension records, as they would not have drawn Confederate pensions, and their Union pensions would probably not make mention of the Confederate service. If you have not already done so, get their Union service records. There may be a possibility that prior Confederate service may be mentioned.Unfiled Papers and Slips Jim Martin, Thu Sep 21 00:28 Unfiled records.
