William Sterling enlisted in Company B (Captain Harrell's) of Lewis' Squadron, Partisan Rangers in Blountsville, Alabama on 10 August 1862. Apparently, Company B later became Company E. He appeared on muster rolls for the summer of 1864, but in the last entry of his service record he is listed as a deserter. However, he received a Confederate Pension, which lists none of his service with Lewis, but cites his service in Company B of Forrest's Cavalry, and that he was wounded at a "battle near Shelbyville, Tennessee." Family research tells me that this was the same man (i.e., not two different Wm Sterlings); I've been attempting to reconcile the service records. Ultimately, my goal is to place a proper tombstone for him at his resting place (which is unknown) but near Athens, Alabama. My thanks to Mr. Lowe and Mr. Pitts for their prompt replys to my original query.
