It's good to have "the rest of the story" posted; most people assume General Taylor surrendered the troops under his command at Citronelle on May 4, 1865. He made an agreement with General Canby on this date; actual paroles did not begin until May 10th at Gainesville, Meridian and other points. Confederate soldiers did not know they were to be surrendered until Taylor returned to camp and made the announcement.
