Ebenezer Methodist Church

Ebenezer Methodist Church [today called Pickensville Methodist Church], located in Pickensville, Pickens County, Ala. was used as a Confederate hospital during the war. It is reported to have been used in April 1865 for treating the soldiers wounded during Croxton's Raid. I think that also recall reading somewhere that it was used after the Battle of Shiloh. If it was indeed used at both those times, odds are that it may have been established as a permanant hospital, and may have been in use during the interim period of those two battles.

The church, present structure built in 1824, is a white frame building with plaster covered walls inside. On the plaster were written scripture verses in gold [leaf?] script. I don't know if these are still there. Across the front are six Greek style columns.

A marble topped table is used as the communion table. It was purchased in 1821, and so would have been a fixture there during the church's use as a hospital. It was used in funerals in peace time as a stand for caskets. I can easily imagine its use during the war.

The church stands today, and is in excellent condition from what I have been told, and from the picture that I have seen of the church. [See pg. 71 of "The Heritage of Pickens Co.", 1999, and pg. 121 of "Pickens County Alabama History and Families", 1998, for photos and articles.]
