While there is some dispute about the origin of the name Pickens County, it is fairly well proven that it was named for General Pickens of the Revolutionary War who is associated with S.C.

I've never seen anything written about the name Palmetto, but I have to assume that it is from S.C. origin, since as far as I know, there have never been any Palmetto plants in Pickens County.

Most early residents (1810' and 1820's) of Pickens County were from S.C. However, the later residents (1830's), many of whom settled in the Palmetto area were from N.C. Perhaps Palmetto had already been named before this influx from N.C.
