Four of the orginal companies started out from different points in Alabama and went to Memphis. The regiment didn't exist prior to the end of December 1861. Seven individual companies (including the Alabama commands) formed in August, September and October of 1861 and camped at Germantown, Tenn. near Memphis. Three other companies from Tennessee and Mississippi joined in December to make the requisite ten for a regiment. At that time an election was help and Alpheus Baker elected colonel. He received notice by telegraph while on duty with the 1st Alabama Regiment at Pensacola.

There's a web page for Avery's 39th Tennessee which explains some of this. The part about being at Bowling Green is wrong. Looks as if at least one of the Alabama companies was attached to Wirt Adams' Mississippi regiment during the fall of 1861.
