Laura, it could be that your relative was captured and sent to Rock Island Prison like my gguncles. They were with the 24th Ala and captured around Cassville Ga in 1864. They opted to get out before they died in prison. The 2nd Vol were mostly raised from prisoners at Rock Island. In all there were 6 Vol units raised from the prisons. Dee Brown's book "The Galvanized Yankees" is great on the subject.
