It helped me! One of the better candidates on this list is J. D. Harper, name also given as John Harper, Co. "B", Lewis' Ala. Cav. Battn. He enlisted on Jan. 23, 1864 under Captain Barnes and surrendered at Gainesville AL May 14, 1865. He gave his residence as Jackson, Clarke Co. AL. Here's some information on his company:

Company “B” of Clarke County

Wilbur P. Barnes. Elected Captain March 1, 1864; formerly a member of Company “C”, Murphy’s Battalion, Alabama and Florida Cavalry. Surrendered at Gainesville, Alabama, May 14, 1865.

Organized September 16, 1863, by Captain E. A. C. McGee, members mustered on October 12, 1863, for six months as a local defense company. Officers and men enlisted in Confederate service at Grove Hill, Alabama, March 1, 1864.

This is almost certainly the young man in question; please contact me if you want to have further information on this command.
