cowdogcannonMon Apr 2 12:27:46 2001 I agree with Hayes on the possiblities that should be investigated. I do not think it would be a civil war eracannon because of the small size. Even the mountain howitzers were bigger than this and had a 4.62 inch bore.It is possible to have been a boat 'swivel' gun or maybea private person's 'signal' gun. The possiblity of Jackson's indian fighters is there. However, if it wereto be a small spanish 'cart' gun, the worth in historyand dollar's could be great. It could be so with the areayou are talking about. A few questions? Is the bore rifled? This will rule out an early gun. Does the barrelhave 'dog ears' (handles on each side above the trunnions for hand carrying)? Any markings at all? Any marking on theoutside lip of the gun or on the side of the trunnion? Doesthe cannon have a reinforcement band either welded or sweated on the back part of the gun? Does the vent have anymaterial in it at all? If it has any metal, it was probably using a friction primer(civil war era), If it hasany cloth in the vent it was probably using matchlock.Cannon Hayes Lowe, Mon Apr 2 20:23
