Here's a summary on the company you mentioned. General Bragg ordered the original organization disbanded, but it was reconstituted a year later by order of the war department. A few months later a couple of companies were added to the battalion and it became known as the 58th Alabama. Finally, in 1864 it was consolidated with the 32nd Alabama. The battalion served in Bate's Brigade of A. P. Stewart's "Little Giant" Division at Chickamauga, but later transferred to Clayton's Brigade of the same division. Ken Jones has a good history of this brigade on his page, which you can find at

Be sure to check out the 58th Ala. flag! The inverted cannon in the center are there to distinguish this regiment for its capture of Federal artillery along the LaFayette Road on Sept. 19th at Chickamauga.

You may also want to visit the John W. Inzer Museum at the address given below. Inzer served with your ancestor's unit until captured on Missionary Ridge. He's the best source for your questions. When you go to the website listed below, look at the last lines on the page. A copy of Inzer's diary can be ordered for $15 (which will help support the museum, too). It should provide many hours of interesting reading!

Here's the company summary:

Company “A” of Saint Clair County “Springville Volunteers”

Sheriff Brewster. Commission vacated April 28, 1862. Later served as 2nd Lieutenant of Company “K”, 18th Alabama Infantry Regiment.
George S. Markham. Elected Captain March 2, 1863; formerly 1st Sergeant of Company “L”, 18th Alabama Infantry Regiment. Later served as Captain of Company “A”, 58th Alabama Infantry Regiment.

On December 27, 1861, members enlisted for twelve months service at Ashville, Alabama. Serving as Company “A”, Blount’s 5th Alabama Infantry Battalion, the command was dissolved on April 28, 1862. Officers and men merged with others from Company “G” to form Company “L”, 18th Alabama Infantry Regiment. Reforming on March 2, 1863, they later served as Company “A”, 9th Alabama Infantry Battalion and later Company "A", 58th Alabama Infantry Regiment.

If you have access to Confederate Veteran Magazine, there's a great article about the Little Giant Division at Chickamauga which I believe was written by General A. P. Stewart.
