Well, I don't know, but there was a W. F. Battles in the 12th AL Cavalry, Co. A/E, and there was a James W. Battles in the 12th AL Cavalry, Co. A. (according to the _Roster of Confederate Soldiers_). Since brothers generally were in the same regiment and company, this could be them, assuming the transcribers mistook an "M" for a "W".
