John C. CarterHollywood CemeteryWed Mar 21 22:40:29 2001 Perry...Hollywood Cemetery is the most likely place to look for your ancestor, as most of the dead from the battlefield at Drewry's Bluff (and most battles from 1862 on)were sent to Hollywood Cemetery for burial. It is often referred to as "the Soldiers' Section" of Hollywood. Prior to then many were sent to Oakwood Cemetery on the northeast of Richmond. Confederate Secretary of War, George W. Randolph, authorized Hollywood to expand in July, 1862 as it was believed that Oakwood had filled up (it actually had space for thousands more). In 1862, hospitals in the eastern part of Richmond were authorized to send their dead to Oakwood Cemetery, while Hollywood received the ones from the western hospitals. Chimborazo was one of those eastern hospitals. However, since the July 1862 decision to expand Hollywood Cemetery, most hospitals began to send their dead to Hollywood. I add this just in case you cannot find your ancestor at Hollywood. There were also Confederate burials at Shockoe and Hebrew Cemeteries. If you ever have a chance to visit Hollywood- go- it's a fabulous place!Good luck in your search.JohnRe: Hollywood Cemetery Anonymous, Thu Mar 22 11:15 Re: Hollywood Cemetery Anonymous, Thu Mar 22 11:44
