As I was about to say, the unit was organized for coastal defenses and operated primarily against the garrison at Fort Barrancas, Florida (Pensacola).
During the first half of 1864 a large nubmer of the men had left the ranks without authorization (French leave) and so depleted the unit that it was temporarily consolidated with the 7th Alabama Cavalry. New recruits were added to the unit and the Regiment was soon at a strength of over twelve hundred officers and enlisted men.
The unit was involved in the Battle of Blakeley and conducted rear guard actions for the infantry units to Georgetown and Union Springs.
On April 30, 1865 the unit surrendered near Demopolis, Alabama.
