H. P. Williams joined Co. "A", 12th Miss. Cav. Regt. on Aug. 19, 1863 at Gainesville, Ala. He was a farmer, age 36, a resident of Sumter Co. Ala., brown hair and eyes, florid complexion and five feet eleven inches tall. His captain was David Hitt Williams, and he surrendered with his unit at Gainesville, Ala. May 14, 1865.

This company was recruited in Sumter and Greene Countiesand called the "Stonewall Rangers". After the first captain became surgeon of the regiment, James M. Winston was promoted Captain June 2, 1864, to rank from May 31, 1864. Surrendered at Gainesville, Alabama, May 14, 1865. The company mustered for Confederate service on August 19, 1863, and acted under orders of the Conscript Bureau until ordered to report to Colonel Armistead on April 18, 1864.

Records are filed as 12th Mississippi, however, it was more often numbered 16th Confederate Cavalry. Its most common name was Armistead's Regiment. I can relate details of the regiment's service if anyone is interested.
