What you may be looking for very well could be what was at the time of the war Howard College at Marion, Alabama. It was founded in 1842 and was run with a military system. The chappelcertainly and a barracks,I think, was used as a Confederate hospital. Sometime after the war in the 1870s it was relocated to Birmingham. What became of it then, I am not sure. As to the Marion connection, Col. James T. Murfee who commanded the Alabama Corps of Cadets at the University of Alabama during the war had become associated with Howard College before the move to Birmingham. He may have also been associated with Howard before and/or during the war, but my memory is a bit fuzzy on this. In any event, when Howard College left Marion, Col. Murfee started present day Marion Military Institute on the site of Howard. M.M.I claims a founding date of 1842 because of this, but this is not exactly accurate in a strict sense. Some 27 years ago I spent a few years there as a young cadet.
