Just another Confederate deserter?

Could it be that Sgt. Sullivan was just another, of the many, Confederate deserters? It would be interesting to know if he returned to service in the Union Army. I doubt it. If that was his intent, he'd have waited until the regiment was closer to the Union lines. Montgomery would be a very odd place to desert if he had any intentions other than simple desertion.

The thought also occurs to me that he might not have deserted at all...perhaps some ill befell him. Perhaps he was murdered, or arrested as a spy...who knows?

Interesting story on which to conjecture.
