You need the book by that title to help answer any of your questions. It's by Dr. Kenneth A. Hafendorfer, who did a great deal of work to discover the site and circumstances of each of the actions involved in Wheeler's efforts to cover the retreat of Bragg's army. Hafendorfer wrote this book because he felt these actions and the men who lost their lives in them ought to be recorded. He also describes many of the other small cavalry fights which took place in Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee during the summer of 1862.

Your ancestor served in the 3rd Confederate Cavalry Regiment, which included companies from the 11th Alabama Cavalry Battalion. The 3rd was never combined with any other command as far as I know. Perhaps Dr. Hafendorfer speculates about the burial of the dead in his book and I overlooked it. I'd expect that the circumstances of the retreat wouldn't have allowed time for proper treatment of comrades lost in battle.

I wish you well in your search.
