I posted this below but thought I would post it here too to be sure you saw it.

In the 1860's Vance was known as Trion. Croxton was on his way from destroying the works at Tannehill directly to Tuscaloosa. Confederate Cav. under "Red" Jackson surprised and attacked his column from the rear and scattered them.
Though not a major engagement this was evidently more than "just a skirmish" as Jackson reported that he had whipped them so badly that they were no longer a threat. Jackson was under orders to try and concentrate with the rest of Forrest's Cav north of Selma and thus did not follow up his victory. This fight was the reason Croxton made his round about march north and west and entered Tuscaloosa "through the back door"
