For some reason I could not get your post replying to mine below to open, but from the subject I assume you are saying that the surrender terms were differant at Port Gibson. I have since learned (from Al Turner on CW Gen. Forum)that Capt. Pratt, some of his men and Col.Pettus were cut off and captured in battle, therefore there could have been no formal "surrender terms". (Col Pettus and a few others escaped a few days latter) It seems to me that soldiers captured thus would not have been denied exchange simply because there was no written agreement. Or was this "Unconditional Surrender" Grant's policy? There has to be more to this. Do you know where Port Gibson POW's where imprisoned?
