Speculation....

There are two records that show him treated in a Federal hospital, and a card that appears to be from a Confederate source on Sept. 29, 1863. At the time Chattanooga was cut off from Union lines, and there may have been some intent to reduce the number of Confederates they needed to care for. I admit it's unusual. There might have been an informal exchange of Federal wounded in Confederate hands for Confederate wounded in Federal hands for similar reasons.

The 43rd Alabama also includes records for John F. Etheridge of Co. "B". He enlisted on Mar. 20, 1862, at Linden, Ala. He was a patient in Howard's Grove Hospital ,Richmond VA from May 11 to June 27, 1864, and surrendered at Appomattox.

Edmond Etheridge enlisted in Marengo County on Mar. 5, 1864, and joined Co. "E". He was in the same hospital during the same time, but was released and sent home on furlough. He didn't return and was shown absent w/o leave on Oct. 15, 1864. Records show that he surrendered with Co. "C", 21st Alabama, which left Mobile about April 10, 1865, and lay down arms at Meridian MS May 13, 1865.

Andrew J. Etheridge enlisted in Co. "E" from Marengo County on April 5, 1862, but later transferred to Co. "B". He surrendered at Appomattox with this regiment.

William R. Etheridge enlisted in Co. "A" from Marengo County on Mar. 11, 1862. He was killed in the fighting I described to you earlier on Snodgrass Hill (09-20-63) and was elected to the Confederate Roll of Honor.

I'd guess all these men were related, being from the same county.
