Wounded at Chickamauga....
Tue Feb 27 11:07:49 2001

Seems as if you already have much data on this man, but you didn't mention that he was wounded. He records show he was wounded and captured on Sept. 20, 1863. This would've been in the fighting for Snodgrass Hill at Chickamauga GA. He was treated for a gunshot wound in the upper third of his right thigh in a Federal hospital at Chattanooga and apparently released to Confederate authorities a few days later. He returned to his unit, was detailed in the brigade bakery in February 1865, and captured again in the fighting near Petersburg on Mar. 25, 1865 (Watkins House). Federal records show that he was released at Point Lookout MD on June 11, 1865: residence Marengo Co Ala., fair complexion, light brown hair, blues eyes, five feet seven and a quarter inches high (very exact!).

The 43rd belonged to Gracie's Brigade throughout the war, spending its first year or more in northeast Tennessee before being called to join the Army of Tennessee below Chattanooga. In late November 1863 it was assigned to accompany Longstreet's command back to the Knoxville area. After wintering in the valley above Knoxville, it was brought by rail to Richmond VA in early May 1864. The regiment served in the defenses of Richmond and Petersburg and surrendered at Appomottox.

By the way, there were several men by the name "Ethridge' or "Etheridge' from Marengo County who served in this regiment.
