While you were composing this, I was composing "51st was a red herring!". See that below for more details regarding Kirkpatrick's Battalion (particularly its formation).

I'll address some of the new issues/questions that you raise here, though.

There is no evidence (in Broadfoots or the various microfilm records that I have seen so far) that W.M. Weaver was connected to the 42nd. EXCEPT, that his replacement as Acting Ordnance Officer was from the 42nd. [The microfilm rolls that I have seen so far are the 37th roll, the compiled service record roll, pension roll, and Confederate staff officer roll.]

W.M. Weaver was Acting Ordance Officer from Nov. 1863 through Jan. 1864, when he was relieved and sent back to his "regiment".

If I had access to Kirkpatrick's Battalion records, I probably could find when he joined. Unfortunately, I do not.

I don't really know the timeline on Goldsby's and the 3rd Reserve Regiment. Could he have belonged to these sometime previous to his assignment as Acting Ordnance Officer? The problem is that there is absolutely no record of any other William or W.M. Weaver in Dallas County in this time period.

Also, note that according to Dr. Jones' pages, the 3rd Regiment Reserves was a *Junior* reserve, while the 3rd Battalion Reserves was a *Senior* reserve unit. I have not looked at the microfilm on these units (in fact, I'm not sure what to look under!).
