Heritage Books, Bowie, MD has published a book FIRST ALABAMA CAVALRY, USA BY Glenda McWhirter Todd. They are at www.heritagebooks.com. This unit had many men from northern Alabama. Also you might check the 1st and 2nd Regiments U. S. Volunteers.....they are made up of southrons mainly from Rock Island Prison. Considered traitors they were called "Galvinized Yankees". There is a book THE GALVINIZED YANKEES" by D. Alexander Brown published by University of Illinois Press (address unknown), 1963
