:Jason, That is a deep subject. From all my research, I have found cases of prisoners being offered their freedom to go west and fight Indians. Other times deserters would cross the lines and join whatever unit may be facing them. If you research a thousand cases, I am sure you can find a thousand different answers. Here in Miss., we had the "Free State Of Jones", leaning more to the North. I did read, but did not copy, a report that stated "Miss. lost more men (about 58,000) than any other state, and had less (600) fight for the North. My figures are not exact, but I think they are in the ballpark. Maybe Mr. Lowe will pick up on this.
