Southerns fighting for North

Through many years of studying the Civil War, one finds numerous examples of Southerns fighting for the Union. Many Southern men opted for the Union, with many areas of some states being decidedly Confederate unfriendly. Conversely, many, many Northerns fought for the Confederacy. A famous Southern one, General George H. Thomas, the Rock of Chickamauga, was from Virginia. I recall reading that his sisters wouldn't speak to him for many years after the war's end. Read any good account of the Battle of Chickamauga and you will discover General Thomas.
