Dear Alan, Thanks for the quick response. We are not completely sure about this identification. Our records on Captain Stuart of the 27th Ala. Inf. show his name was John B. and he was dismissed by court-martial in July, 1864. Our theory was that the best candidate was 1st Lt. James H. Stewart of Co. I, 4th Ala. Inf. Reg. from Madison County (his name is spelled "Stuart" in Broadfoot's AORSupplement). We hoped that someone could confirm this, but were surprised by another possibility. We have adjusted our files to include your info. The battalion is enigmatic for sure - do you know anyone who can help us fill in our list of line officers in its seven companies? Thanks again for your help!
