Hayes Lowe
3rd Reg. Res. vs. 3rd Batt. Res.

Having never looked at the Alabama reserve units before, I'm still learning as I go.

I just realized that there were two different 3rd Alabama Reserves, formed at about the same time.

One was the 3rd Alabama *Regiment* Reserves, and the other was the 3rd Alabama *Battalion* Reserves.

It appears from Dr. Jones' page, that the 3rd Regiment was the Jr. Reserves, and the 3rd Battalion was the Sr. Reserves. The 3rd Batt. was consolidated with the 4th (Battalion or Regiment?) Reserves to form the 65th Alabama Infantry Regiment.

In this particular case (that of W.W. Weaver), he would have been in the 3rd Ala. Inf. Regiment Reserves, meaning he should have been a 17 or 18 year old in 1864/65. I haven't had a chance to check the Dallas Co. 1860 census, yet. That will be the next step. However, the 1860 signature that I have for Weaver suggests that he was very young (looks like a child's signature). Going simply by the above, he should have been about 12 years old in 1860, which adds up.
