What you say about examples is certainly true. At the same time I'm impelled to believe that the behavior of older men, good or bad, influences younger people. To reinforce your point, in the 1820's young Robert E. Lee certainly knew of his older half-brother's behavior (as well as his father's) and determined not to behave like either one.

If memory serves, a report on the action at Chehaw Station exists in Capt. Davidson's 11th Alabama file. Take a look at "Sherman's Horsemen: Union Cavalry Operations in the Atlanta Campaign" by David Evans for a full description of the actions at Chehaw and Ten Islands during Rousseau's raid. I'll check the Davidson file and get back with you.
