Before 1868 Cherokee County included a large part of Etowah County, including the town of Gadsden. All the McAfee men from NE Ala. who appear on the Broadfoot index are from Talladega, just south of Cherokee. These are:

McAfee, Green P. F, 30th Ala. Inf. Regt.
McAfee, Henry E, 62nd Ala. Inf. Regt. (1st Resv.)
McAfee, Nicholas S. B, 5th Ala.Inf. Regt. (new Co. B)

All the others are from Mobile. Of course there could be enlistments in Georgia units just across the state line. I don't know Georgia units, so I'll leave that to someone else. I believe the neighboring Georgia county is Floyd.
