For whatever reason Capt Laird was not among
those captured at Island #10; he resigned in
May 1862 stating he had no one left to command;
he served later as Pvt, Choctawhatchie Rangers,
a Coffee County militia company commanded by
Capt (Rev) William Bush; since the City of
Geneva is on the Pea River which allowed boat
traffic from Choctawhatchie Bay and the Gulf,
the folks there considered themselves to be
members of a Gulf community.
