Many thanks for all your help! Here is some more data on Lt. Patton for anyone interested.

Acording to the burial lists of Soldiers Rest, Cedar Hill Cemetery, Vicksburg, a J. E. Patton of Co. K, 40th Alabama died on 8 Jun 1863 at Hospital Number 3 and was buried in that cemetery. His grave number is unfortunately not shown. (http://www.nps.gov/vick/city_cem/chill_pq.htm)

I have some other information on the J. E. Patton in my family, but I am not certain the two J.E. Pattons are same individual.
