My interest in this guy is that I own most (all?) of his pre-war and wartime library. One book is even signed (and dated 1864) at Petersburg, Va.

Judging from the books that he owned, he was a very interesting and well educated guy (even by today's standards). He read French, and owned a Spanish to English dictionary. He also read Greek.
