Thanks for your attention to detail. The battery supported by the 44th Alabama at the crossroads would appear to have been that of Captain Ross, Sumter Flying Artillery. For info on that unit, see this URL:

Even without any serious research, since Wright didn't mention the 44th Alabama in his report of July 8th, one would have to assume that the regiment

a) arrived too late to have been involved in the action, or
b) was assigned to Wright's Brigade afterwards, or
c) both of the above.

The correct answer is b), just as you stated. Obviously Brewer's off a day or two when he says the regiment arrived on July 1st. Based on what we know, I agree with your contention that Seven Days should not be included in a list of battles for this unit. Just for grins, we might check the battle list for the 44th Alabama found in Oates' book:
