Thomas Banister enrolled June 4, 1861, with the "Yancey Guards" at Montgomery, Ala. Officers and men were from DeKalb County and enrolled for a three-year term under Captain Abner A. Hughes. This command became Company "I", 10th Alabama Infantry Regiment, about June 26, 1861, and almost immediately went to Virginia. Records show that Thomas Banister was appointed a corporal on August 5, 1861, but that he died at home on March 30, 1862.

On May 15, 1862, J. T. and R. M. Banister enlisted in Capt. R. B. Lankford's Cavalry Company from DeKalb County. They enrolled at a place called Shell Mound, Ala. Lankford's Company served as part of Howard's Cavalry Battalion, which later became Company "C", 3rd Confederate Cavalry Regiment. Records show R. M. Banister deserting on March 7, 1863, but J. T. Banister appeared as "present for duty" on all rolls through the last on file, that of June 30, 1864. No other Banisters found with these units.
