Were they not used as defense forces in Richmond? Where or to who were they assigned after the horrendous carnage on the left at Sharpsburg? Just a thought. Some of the nearby regiments of Lawton were nearly destroyed that day. Don't see them (2nd & 11th Ms) in the OR list of opposing forces after that.

If we don't learn anything else from D S Freeman, we should always keep one very important thing in perspective. The Army of Northern Virginia was different in 63' than 62'. The ANV was completely different in 64' than 62', both in leadership, at more than one level, and the ranks. I don't believe he stressed the point in order to make an excuse (for losing the war) available. The truth is important combat skill and courage was always lost first. They always seemed to be out front.
