The distance from Montgomery to Union Springs sounds right, but I'm not aware of a document placing either Patterson's or Roddey's commands at Montgomery. During the fall of 1862, the future 5th Ala. Cav. reported to the War Dept. in Richmond as the 22nd Ala. P. R. Battn. under Major Warren. To further confirm that Warren's Battalion was in NW Alabama, there's a couple of enlistments and a requisition placing it at Tupelo MS in mid-October. The battalion had returned to camp at Union Springs by the end of the month.
