Getting the pension file will really shed some light on many things you mentioned. It appeared that he did receive a pension; seems as there was correspondence with his widow as late as 1924. He and another man who provided testimony said they were the only two members of their company left unhurt and tended the wounded. Personnel attached to field hospitals were returned by the Federals and placed in Camp Lee just outside Richmond. He was then furloughed home.

On Feb. 17, 1864, the Confederate Congress established two classes of reserves to bolster declining military strength. Senior reserves were men between the ages of forty-five and fifty; juniors were seventeen. In actual practice junior reserves included many under that age.
