It is my understanding that only the Federal troops were removed. The Confederate graves have been lost due to hurricanes and tidal erosion. BTW, I had a chance to look at the microfilm on Ship Island prisoners today, and it would appear that the grave listing for J.A. Abercrumbie may in fact be W.A. Abercrombie. All other information on the film falls into place except the first initial and I could find no other listing for a J.A. Abercrumbie in the prisoner roll. That name only appears in the grave listing. The death date on the prisoner listing for W.A. isn't clear but it looks like he died in November 1864. The entry for P. Abercrombie identified him as a member of "Nyer's" or "Myer's" Company, Home Guard.
