5th Ala. Battalion

I've not looked at 5th Battalion records carefully for a number of years, but don't recall seeing anything that would relate members of any company with the Jeff Davis Legion. 5th Battalion muster rolls are among the most complete on film, going right up to February 1865, all transfers and details faithfully noted. A healthy number of this unit surrendered at Appomattox a few weeks later.

The Jeff Davis Legion went to the Carolinas with Hampton in 1865. Horses couldn't be properly fed and new mounts were unavailable. Many infantrymen would've dearly loved to transfer to a mounted unit, but their requests were almost always rejected. The Confederacy needed infantry more than cavalry at this time.
