Hayes Lowe
41st at Appomattox
Wed Jan 24 14:03:33 2001

The 41st was indeed paroled at Appomattox as part of Moody's Brigade (41st, 43rd, 59th, 60th, and 23rd Battalion).

Moody certified that only 220 arms bearing men were present on 4/9/1865. That's an average of less than 45 per unit!

No Dowdles were paroled at Appomattox, in any unit from any state.

I have read that many of the men did not stick around for the paroles, instead, they dropped their arms and walked home. So, even though only 220 of this brigade were paroled, it does not mean that there were only 220 survivors in Virginia.
