Hayes Lowe
24th Ala. Inf. Reg.
Wed Jan 24 08:56:37 2001

There's not much been written on the 24th that I have found. Here's a litte info:

Engagements: Blackland, Farmington, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Crow Valley to Jonesboro, Columbia, Franklin, Nashville, and Salisbury.

The 24th was consolidated with the 28th and 34th Alabama Regiments just before surrender. Surrendered near High Point, North Carolina.

Here is something that could be an important clue for you: in April 1862, the regiment's year of enlistment as a reserve unit was up, and the regiment was reorganized in the Hitchcock Warehouse, in Mobile.

Many men across the south had enlisted in March and April of 1861 for one year's service, and many of these units were sent to Mobile for their year of service. When their year of enlistment expired, many joined units at Mobile. Might explain your man's situation.

You might want to see if he may have been in some other unit before the 24th Ala. His microfilmed service record with the 24th will probably provide some clues. It may show his enlistment date, location, and more.
