Alan Pitts
possible Bibb County connection....

The 24th Alabama seems an unlikely unit for a Mississippian to join, but there's a possible connection. Almost all of this regiment came from Mobile, being formed of "fire" companies from the city of Mobile. However, it included a Shelby County company, and Shelby borders Bibb County. That's one possibility.

Also, parts of Bibb, Shelby and Autauga Counties were taken to form Chilton County after the war. Faulkner's "Autauga Guards" organized in this area, and his company happened to join Blythe's Mississippi Battalion in 1861. After serving in Blythe's Battalion for a year, this company and another Alabama company in the same unit reformed as one company and transferred to the 24th Alabama. The 24th Aalabama was short one company at the time, and it was assigned to duty as Co. "K" of that regiment.

People in the South were constantly moving. Countless cases exist in which men who had recently moved to one community returned home when the war began and/or joined a military unit from home. As long as you enlisted, the Confederate government wasn't particular about what unit you joined. That being the case, many elected to join friends, neighbors and family members in military service. Faulkner's "Autauga Guards" may included a number of familiar faces.
